Hello, I’m Adrian!
Or, if you go back to the days when InfoSec hung out on Twitter, you might know me as “Sawaba”.
I’ve been doing cybersecurity since 2001.
Beginning in 2009, I started writing, speaking, and building community.
Research
I love researching. I’ve described myself as a “compulsive” researcher in the past. When I need answers to a question, and the data doesn’t exist, I get to work. Some of my areas of research:
- How companies fail - whenever a detailed breach report drops in public view, I analyze it to pull out lessons and insights. The Microsoft/Storm-0558 CSRB report is a recent example.
- The Cybersecurity Market - I was an industry analyst over at 451 Research for a bit, and the bug never left, even after I moved on to other roles. I still write about market trends and insights over on The Cyber Why.

My Work
I’m faculty at IANS Research. If you’re an IANS client, you can schedule as many Ask-An-Expert calls with me as you want!
I’m the host of the Enterprise Security Weekly podcast. Every week, me and my co-hosts interview interesting folks about current topics in the industry, and discuss the latest news. The podcast focuses particularly on industry trends affecting security practitioners, and the latest trends in the security product market. Practitioners (from newbies to seasoned CISOs), founders, and investors alike have told us they get a lot out of the podcast!
I’m a regular contributor on The Cyber Why Substack, and a co-host on The Cyber Why podcast.
I was one of the original founders of BSides Knoxville in 2015, and have helped organize it for over 10 years now. We’ve had 8 in-person events, and 2 virtual ones (2020 and 2021). Each has grown in size, and the conference now pulls in over 400 attendees every year.

It is a 1-day (always a Friday in May), 2-track conference. This past year (and hopefully for the foreseeable future), track 1 was Knoxville’s amazing Mill & Mine music venue, and track 2 was the very high-tech, modern event space at Regas Square.
For many years, I have been a member of the Security Tinkerers, and most recently, have served on the board, working to build it into a trusted space for security leaders to share and network. We have private in-person events, and a very active Slack we use to learn and share with each other.
